Most people walk away from a crash and tell themselves it was no big deal.

The soreness will pass. The stiff neck is nothing. Seeing a doctor means another bill, so it can wait. And the insurance company will take care of it, because they are on my side.

That last one is where people get hurt the most. The adjuster who calls you the next morning is being paid by a company whose job is to keep the payout small.

Here is what we see over and over:

An injury that felt minor in week one turns into months of treatment. By the time it is clear how bad it really is, there is almost nothing on record. No doctor visit. No documentation. A recorded statement given before anyone knew what they were dealing with. Those first few days follow the case all the way to the end.

So take it seriously from the start. Get checked out even if you feel fine. Write down what happened while it is fresh in your mind. And talk to someone who works for you before you talk to the adjuster.

Do you wish you were a fly on the wall during my conversations with the insurance adjusters I deal with on a daily basis? This would be a common response you would hear: “we just don’t see the value…”

Insurance companies train adjusters to deny, delay and diminish claims. The adjusters are trained to dispute injuries, and in particular, to diminish the value of human suffering. This is REAL. The insurance companies do NOT play nice or fair!

So, while this cartoon displays this scenario in a light-hearted way, insurance companies should not be approached lightly. Do not for a second believe that an insurance company, even your own, has your best interests in mind.
