Trust is Earned, not Freely Given

As many of you know, Kelcie and I come from a Sicilian background. If you know anything about Sicilians, one does not gain entry into “the circle” until that right is earned. Similarly, we operate from a place of “trust is not given freely, it is earned.” I think this is part of the reason Sicilians have gained a reputation for being so skeptical.

I have always applied this “Sicilian” approach to my practice, and with my clients. As a result of my background, I feel obligated to gain my clients’ trust, rather than arrogantly expect them to give it freely. So, I refrain from making promises I cannot keep. I refrain from overpromising, and underperforming. Similarly, I refrain from knowingly setting the bar too low just to make myself and our firm look good. This kind of behavior is, in my opinion, untrustworthy.

Instead, I make it a point to be honest and upfront – both about the strengths, and about the challenges in each case. I make it a point to be honest about expectations that are unrealistic, and to be honest about my own limitations. All of this is to earn trust because I want my clients to know that my words and actions have meaning, that they are honest, and that they can be relied upon a.k.a. trusted. I believe this is the best way to serve my clients.

At a recent meeting with a client who has another legal case, handled by another attorney, our client told us that she did not trust her other attorney because her other attorney was not transparent, made promises she did not keep, and did not deliver upon stated expectations… behavior that can fast-track losing trust with a client! One other thing about Sicilians… once you lose trust, good luck getting it back! I would never want to find myself in this position.

So, instead of asking you to “trust me with your referrals,” I am instead asking you to allow me the opportunity to earn your trust, and the trust of your referrals.
