As we find ourselves nearly halfway through the year, it’s an opportune moment to reflect on the legal changes that have come into effect recently in California—particularly those that could impact you, your family, or your community. Staying informed about these updates is crucial, as they can influence your rights and responsibilities in various situations.
One significant change pertains to auto insurance minimum liability limits. Effective January 1, 2025, California has increased the required minimum coverage for drivers. The new limits are $30,000 for bodily injury or death per person (previously $15,000), $60,000 for bodily injury or death per accident (up from $30,000), and $15,000 for property damage (formerly $5,000). These adjustments aim to provide better financial protection for all parties involved in vehicular accidents.
Why does this matter to you? When you are injured in a car accident, more times than not, the other driver has no significant assets to their name. This means that the amount you can recover from them is limited to their auto insurance limits – no matter how terrible your property damage, injuries, and pain and suffering are. Increasing these minimum liability limits was a necessary change to address the rise in the cost of nearly everything since the original minimum limits were established in 1974. And, in particular, over the last 5 years, we have all experienced the rising costs associated with medical care, cars, car parts, labor, etc., which all affect those who are injured in an auto accident.
