Justice is Served – What’s Next?

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, and again: it matters who you hire as your personal injury lawyer. Some lawyers and firms will work hard to sign you as a client, but that is the hardest work that will ever be done on your case. You want a lawyer who is going to work hard to get you a good result, sure, but you also want a lawyer who will continue to help you once the case has resolved. Why? One of the lesser talked about topics is the workload on the backend of a case – that is, after the case has resolved.

Particularly in the more complex, higher value cases, there is a substantial amount of work that occurs after resolution of the case, which greatly affects the amount of money a client will receive from their settlement. A client’s long-term future post-settlement is equally as important to us and our clients, as is getting the settlement result itself. We are not in the business of leaving loose ends.

To name a few items, here at our firm, we handle:

  • In-house, the resolution of all liens and claims for reimbursement, including hospitals, private health insurance, and government programs such as Medi-Cal and Medicare.
  • Negotiating a fair and reasonable release and settlement agreement. Defendant-corporations, in particular, will include overly broad confidentiality clauses, non-disparagement clauses, and far-reaching indemnity language that must be revised.
  • Connecting our clients with the appropriate advisors, whether that is a settlement consultant, a financial advisor, a CPA, an estate-planning attorney, a benefits consultant, and more. When our clients receive a large sum of money, we want to make sure that it is properly invested, and will not have negative impacts on tax liability, or the receipt of entitlements, such as social security, Medicare, Medi-Cal, or other programs.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and invariably, unexpected issues can pop up during the handling of a case, as well as after.

You hire a lawyer for their experience and expertise, so you want to make sure that this expertise is being applied even after the lawyer does what they were primarily hired for – securing fair compensation for you.

Again, it matters who you hire.

Our unique, value-based approach allows us to develop strong relationships with our clients and prioritize their needs.
