Insurance is Simply a Contract: Be Certain You Have Purchased the Proper Coverages.

Insurance Contract

A potential client called in, describing an accident in which she and her boyfriend had been recently involved. She owned the vehicle, but her boyfriend was driving. She had the vehicle insured on a policy of insurance that also insured other members of her family. The potential client, however, no longer lived with her family, but she did live with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend was not a named insured on the policy, nor was he listed as a household driver. There will likely not be coverage afforded for the accident under the girlfriend’s policy.

This is a friendly reminder to verify that your automobile insurance (and all of your insurance products) meets your current needs and circumstances. Unfortunately, it is too often an accident like the one described above, which causes people to realize their insurance is insufficient, or is outdated. Remember, insurance is simply a contract – a bargained for exchange. Thus, make sure you are selecting and paying for the right coverages, and following the rules required to afford that coverage as needed.

Nearly across the board, the automobile insurance carriers will require that you either name as an insured, or at least as a household driver, those individuals who live in your home and may have access to, or may use, your vehicle. If you fail to take this step, the insurance carrier could disclaim coverage for any loss, which involves, or is caused by, the unnamed resident of your home. The consequences for this can be severe, such as no liability coverage for injury caused to others, no coverage for damage to the vehicle, or no uninsured motorist coverage for the unnamed driver of the vehicle, should the at-fault party not have any policy of insurance.
