I was speaking with a colleague who is a prosecutor in the district attorney’s office. I had mentioned something to the effect of “your job is to get convictions,” to which she quickly replied, “No, my job is to seek justice.” I really liked her response, and it shifted my perspective about her role, and about her purpose.
See, perceptions and stereotypes, even those innocuously formed, really do color our views. I somewhat ignorantly thought that the District Attorney is a publicly elected official, and assumed there would be top-down pressure from the D.A. to get convictions. However, this overly simplistic view discounted the individual motives, ethics, and desires of the prosecutors working in the office.
In a very similar vein, I am often – sometimes jokingly, sometimes not – labeled an “ambulance chaser.” It is a common stereotype about personal injury lawyers. And, let’s face it: there are plenty of reasons to feed that stereotype… It may be the billboards, the jackpot-styled advertising of settlements, or the more unscrupulous characters in the industry that feed this stereotype. But, whatever the reason for the stereotype, just like my overly simplistic perception of my prosecutor friend, the individual actors cannot be discounted or ignored.
I have found this profession to be a very meaningful way to earn a living. I have handled many cases that provided no personal financial gain, but it was the right thing to do. I have made an impact in hundreds of individual clients’ lives, and I have also helped their families. And, I know many other personal injury lawyers who have done the same.
