🔥Hot Tip: Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage AND WHY YOU NEED TO HAVE IT 💸💸💸

It is time to dispense with the myth of “full coverage.” Too many of our clients have believed that they had “full coverage” only to find out – when it’s too late – that they are grossly underinsured.

California law requires that an individual hold a minimum of $15,000 per person, $30,000 per occurrence, in bodily injury liability coverage, and a minimum of $5,000 in property damage coverage. These limits have not changed since the 1970’s. This is technically “full coverage,” but as you can see, is grossly underinsured for today’s world. (Note: these limits are set to increase Jan 1, 2025, pursuant to The Protect California Drivers Act. The limits would increase to $30,000 per person, and $60,000 per occurrence.)

Protect yourself. Check your auto insurance Declaration Page to make sure you are properly covered. We recommend that you purchase collision coverage, which will allow you to repair or replace your own vehicle in the event that the at-fault party does not possess any, or enough, insurance to pay for your vehicle damages. We also recommend that you have at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per occurrence in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. These coverages are generally very affordable, and will be priceless if – God forbid – you find yourself in a situation where you are seriously injured in an auto accident, and the at-fault party does not have enough insurance to cover your damages, like our client example below.

Vehicle Damage

This was our client’s car after a Suburban pulled out in front of her… as you can imagine, her injuries were substantial. Our client sustained multiple rib fractures, a sternum fracture, and has been having swelling on her brain following the collision.

Yet, the driver of the Suburban had a state minimum policy, providing only $15,000 in coverage, and worse yet, our client had no underinsured motorist coverage of her own to look to.

Prior to this collision, our client had believed she was “fully covered.” Now, our client is facing long-term health problems, and the possibility of collecting money directly from the Suburban driver is grim. Let this be a warning! Check your coverages!
